FREE SAILING TUITION FOR ADULTS AT COBNOR
Plus Family activities on 9 October

Cobnor Activities Centre (a ?not for profit? charity based at Cobnor Point, Chidham in Chichester Harbour) is offering free sailing tuition for adults and for young people aged 16 to 19 years old under the auspices of a Sport England Small Grants award. The aim will be to offer courses to enable participants to achieve their RYA Level 1 or Level 2 sailing certificate, and afterwards they will be introduced to a sailing club in Chichester Harbour to enable them to continue sailing, and perhaps do some racing as well. Cobnor will also be running some informal sailing evenings during the spring and summer of 2024 for those with at least a Level 1 qualification.

Each course will be run by Cobnor?s experienced RYA qualified sailing instructors.Spaces are very limited for the courses which will be run over the next 12 months ? the first two day non-residential courses will be held over the weekends of Saturday 15/ Sunday 16 October 2024 from 1000 to 1600, ?Saturday 14/Sunday 15 April 2024 from 1000 to 1600 and ?Saturday 26/Sunday 27 May 2024 from 1000 to 1600. ??More dates for next year will be announced later, and these may include some week day evening courses. Each weekend course will be designed to allow sufficient tuition to achieve either a Level 1 or Level 2 RYA Certificate by the end of the two days. ?If any part of a course is cancelled because of the weather, it will be re-scheduled. Waterproof overclothing and buoyancy aids will be provided free of charge.

Adult wet-suits can be hired at ?5 per day.

To register your interest please email sail@cobnor.com with your name, address, age, your fitness level (as the courses will be using our lightweight Laser Pico dinghies), which date or dates you would like to come (please give more than one if possible), why you would like to join this scheme and where you heard about it. ??As the aim is to encourage more people to take up and continue sailing, preference will be given to those who can demonstrate this.

We will confirm whether there is a place available and send you a kit list and programme.
Afterwards, you will be introduced to one or more sailing clubs in Chichester Harbour who have expressed an interest in working with Cobnor to encourage more adults and young people aged 16 to 19 to take up and carry on sailing. Also register your interest with us if you would like to take part in our informal mid-week sailing in 2024.

Cobnor Activities Centre Trust has received a grant of National Lottery funding from Sport England?s Small Grants Programme for the purchase of six Laser Picos which has enabled it to offer this free sailing scheme. In 2024, a normal Cobnor RYA Level 2 course for an adult will be ?260.

Family activities on 9 October

Cobnor Activities Centre Trust and the Monday Bus are set to benefit from the newly re-launched green Community Support Card scheme running at The Co-operative stores in Delling Lane and Station Road, Bosham. These two worthy causes were chosen by a representative panel of local people prior to the start of the fundraising period.

The Community Support Card scheme works by The Southern Co-operative donating money to the fund every time customers have their special green community cards swiped as they shop, and proves very successful in raising money for local groups.

The total target for fundraising over the coming year is ?10,000 with an equal split of the funds raised being given to both groups.

Fund raising has already begun, but the official ?launch? will be celebrated at a family fun event taking place at Bosham Sailing Club on Sunday 9 October from 12 noon until 4pm. The event is open to the whole local community and will include fun activities and entertainment for all the family including a hog roast, bouncy castle, zumba dancing, face painting etc. Everything on the afternoon, apart from food and drink, is free of charge. There will also be a fancy dress competition, with the theme of 'King Harold' and the Anglo-Saxons - given their strong historical links to Bosham. Come in fancy dress and complete your costume at our craft workshop, ready for the parade later on in the afternoon.

All visitors will also receive a free raffle ticket on entry for the prize draw, which will take place at the end of afternoon and give them the opportunity of winning a hamper of delicious Co-operative goodies worth not less than ?50.

With the support of Co-operative customers, it is hoped that The Southern Co-operative will raise the maximum amount possible to benefit the Cobnor Activities Centre Trust and the Monday Club through the Community Support Card scheme.

Come and see more on 9 October and enjoy an afternoon overlooking the water.
